“I enrolled in cosmetology school and I’m freaking out!”

What to know for your first week at cosmetology/esthetician school…

Dress Code: 

At The Salon Professional Academy San Antonio our students are required to follow our dress code of all black at Level 1. Esthetician students can wear black scrubs as well as all black outfits. If a student is out of dress code they will be sent home. So before you start school make sure you have lots of black outfits within the dress code ready to go. Thrifting is a great option if you are balling on a budget! You can also dye your clothes black using fabric dye.

Clocking In + Clocking Out: 

When you get to school you will need to clock in at the time clock. Every minute matters! You definitely don’t want to be late because tardies will accumulate into occurrences which can lead to suspension days (yikes). Anytime you arrive or leave the building you need to clock in or out. This keeps track of your hours which will determine your graduation date.

Lunch:

All students receive an hour lunch. You have to clock out when leaving for lunch. You are free to bring your own food or go to nearby restaurants- just make sure you are back in time!

What to bring: 

The first week of school is full of new things so you will definitely want to bring a notebook + writing utensils. You will be given your cosmetology kit (which includes brushes, blow dryer, curling iron, mannequins, etc) and your Milady textbook. You should also bring a backpack/bag to carry. Lockers and locks are issued to all students so you can store your personal belongings/ school supplies in a safe place. There is a vending machine with snacks and drinks so you can also bring some cash just in case you need it. The classroom sometimes gets chilly so bring an all black sweater or jacket.

Advice from students:

“Don’t think too much about certain people’s opinions because at the end of the day it’s your choice on how far you go. People told me I wouldn’t make it but here I am as a graduate.”

“If you’re going to commit, commit full force. Don’t just barely do it- do it with everything you have. Really take advantage of your time in school.”

“Really show up, even for the boring days. Take advantage of the educators that you have here because they know a lot.”
