Need a Career Change? Make the Switch to Cosmetology!

So, you’re curious about a career change? Maybe you’ve been at an office job for a few years and don’t feel passionate about it. Or maybe you’re bouncing between jobs and want something more stable. Whatever the case, our cosmetology program at The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), San Antonio can open the door to a variety of exciting careers in the beauty industry. If you’re ready for a change, are a few reasons why pursuing a future in cosmetology could be beneficial for you!

Scheduling is Flexible

Working as a cosmetologist often allows for pretty flexible scheduling. Need to work while your kids are at school? That’s a possibility. Got another job or family obligation? Nights and weekends are also an option. Unlike many other careers, cosmetologists don’t have to stick to a traditional “9 to 5” schedule. Having options is great if you’re a parent, have a busy schedule, or just would rather work in the evening or on a weekend! Whether you rent a booth at a salon, become a salon employee, or provide services from your home, cosmetology could offer flexibility that many other careers do not.

You Can Embrace Creativity

For those who love art and working with their hands, cosmetology can be a great creative career choice. Between cutting and styling hair, developing beautiful colors, and applying avant-garde makeup, cosmetologists get a chance to use their artistic brain every single day! If you’re an intrinsically creative person, then it’s likely that you’ll be happier and more fulfilled in a creative, fast-paced career rather than being stuck behind a computer all day. Every client is different, which means your daily tasks will never be exactly the same. As a stylist or makeup artist, you get to learn someone’s individual tastes and bring their unique vision to life!

It’s a Social Environment

From clients and coworkers to salon staff members and product suppliers, cosmetologists work with and around a lot of people every day. Many office jobs can get lonely, especially if you work remotely. Working in a salon, spa, or behind a makeup counter can give you the chance to make new friends, connect with clients, bounce ideas off your coworkers, and receive valuable, in-person feedback on a daily basis. Even if you’re not the most extroverted social butterfly in the world, human beings are social creatures by nature. We need the company of others. A career in cosmetology could allow you to meet new people and engage in conversation throughout the day.

You Can Constantly Learn New Things

In many office jobs, learning and growth can become stagnant. You’ll learn everything you can and then one day, there will be no more challenges. That’s usually not the case with cosmetology. The beauty industry is constantly changing. Thanks to blogging, social media, and the influencer community, new trends, cutting-edge products, and innovative application techniques are popping up daily. As a cosmetologist, keeping up with what’s new is just part of your job. Clients are looking for someone who’s on top of what’s popular. Working in the beauty industry means there will always be new challenges and new ways to do things!

The demand for hair and other beauty services is continuously growing, so now is a better time than ever to start a career in beauty. Additionally, with the massive influx of freelance makeup artists/stylists, beauty bloggers, vloggers, and influencers, beauty careers are no longer restricted to salons. Why Cosmetology Matters

Cosmetology is a thriving industry, with a growth that surpasses many other trade professions. With a growth rate of over 15% per year, well above the national average, it’s no wonder that the public opinion of cosmetologists is changing.
No longer thought of as the beauty obsessed high-school dropouts, cosmetologists are career-minded professionals who are driven by a deep work ethics and goals.
Nowhere is the commitment and culture of this profession shown better than in the community outreach, and in the good deeds that prove why the beauty industry is important.
So much of our self-esteem and worth is driven by our appearance, and how we perceive ourselves. These important base-lines can be heavily distorted when your life leaves you in a place that makes caring for yourself is difficult, or when your health takes a turn that leaves you questioning your beauty or worth.
It is in these moments that this amazing community shines, displaying their true heart, and showing the world that cosmetology, and the amazing artists behind it, matter.

The 5 Love Languages of Hair

If you’re not familiar with Gary Chapman’s, The Five Love Languages, it is a book that outlines how one expresses and experiences love. Now, the book narrows it down to love between people, but have you ever felt that you might love your hair more than people? Don’t worry, us too. That is why we decided to take the 5 languages of love and make them applicable to the relationship between you and your hair. We’ve broken down the different ways you can express love to your hair depending on its love language.

Receiving Gifts

If your hair’s love language is receiving gifts there are a ton of ways that you can express your love. Everyone feels special when they get a gift, so show your hair that you truly appreciate it! Here are ways to express your love through giving gifts!

  • Give your hair a mask once a week! We personally love Redken’s Color Extend Rich Recovery mask.
  • Wash your hair with sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates can make your hair feel dry, make your color fade faster and even strip your hair of its natural oils. Your hair will feel the love when you decide to start using a sulfate free shampoo like Redken’s Color Extend Magnetics Sulfate-Free Shampoo.
  • Give your hair a nice moisturizing oil mask. Check out Redken’s Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine. This can leave your hair glowing with strong.
  • Quality Time

Don’t be in such a hurry to rush through everything. Slow down and remember that it’s important to give yourself time for things that really matter, like your hair! Express your love to your hair with quality time by:

    • Leaving your conditioner sit on an extra 5 minutes. Five minutes may not seem like much to you but it will mean the world to your hair!
    • Take the time to let your hair air dry vs using a blow dryer. As great as a blow dryer is for your schedule, it’s not so awesome for your hair. Let’s be honest, any kind of heat really isn’t great for your hair. So, wake up a little earlier, put your blow dryer down and let your hair do its thing. Trust us, your hair will appreciate your time!

    Words of Affirmation

Words allow us to build one another up. When your hair has confidence, you have confidence. Express your love to your hair with words of affirmation by:

    • Consulting your hairstylist and ask them what would be best for you hair. Sometimes the urge to do something new and wild with your hair is overwhelming. Next time you start to get those feelings, head to your salon and talk it through with your stylists. Make sure that you are making the best choice. Your hair will not be happy if it has to grow out another unplanned pixie cut.
    • Give yourself a compliment here and there. You know those days where your hair is doing exactly what it should be and it just looks, well, perfect? Say it out loud. Tell your hair it looks good, no one should be ashamed of good hair.

    Acts of Service

Showing your love through services can get a bit tricky, but the trick is to provide your hair with the service that it really needs. Be sure to pay attention and keep in mind what kind of services would be the most beneficial to your hair. Express your love to your hair with acts of service by:

    • Going to the salon and getting a service. It’s nice to be taken care of and pampered. Your hair thinks so too! Get your booty into the salon and give your hair the service it deserves! You can get all types of services to show your hair that you care, such as:
      – Shampoo
      – Blow dry
      – Deep condition
      – Color
      – Cut
      – Style

      Physical Touch

We don’t just mean touching your hair all willie nillie, we mean putting a little thought into it. Touches of thoughtfulness with make your hair feel more loved than ever. When your hair feels good, it looks good! Express your love to your hair with physical touch by:

      • Combing your hair with a gentle comb or brush. Stop with the ripping and pulling. Invest in a good brush or comb and be gentle with your touch.
      • Stop letting it get all tangled while you sleep. Give it a loose braid before you head to bed and you won’t have to worry about that anymore!
