What Should You Do After High School Graduation?

It’s that time of year again: the weather is heating up, the school year is coming to an end, and graduation is not far away. People are probably starting to ask you about your plans for after high school. It might seem like everyone knows what they’re doing, but chances are you’re not the only one who’s a little unsure about the next step.

TSPA-Antonio-Graduation-Plans

Nobody has their life plan all figured out at graduation. Opportunities will come, paths will change, and you might end up somewhere you never could have predicted! Many of our students here at The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), San Antonio, didn’t know they’d work in the beauty industry back when they were in high school.

At the same time, it’s still a good idea to have a shorter-term destination in mind and a few steps you can take to get there. Here are 5 ways you can start thinking about what to do after graduation:

1. Imagine Yourself in 5 Years

Take a moment and imagine yourself in five years. It might seem silly, but visualizing your future is important! Do you live in your hometown or an entirely new city? Are you living with your family, friends, a significant other, or on your own? Do you spend a lot of time with other people or are you focusing on your own hobbies? Maybe you’ve spent the last few years growing your career, or you just finished school and started your first job in a new field.

With all of the positive and exciting things to come, it’s also normal to feel stressed or worried about the future. Being worried about student loans, choosing the “right” career, and wondering if you’re on the right path are all normal ways to feel. While some worries are just part of life, you can make plans to avoid potential stresses. For example, you could choose to get an education with minimal student loans or get lots of information on your career options to feel comfortable with your choice. We offer financial aid to those who qualify, and our Financial Aid Administrator is here to help you understand how it all works.

2. Get to Know Yourself

There are dozens of free personality tests online that can help you learn more about yourself. Knowing if you want to work with other people each day, if you like to be spontaneous, or if you enjoy solving problems will help you decide what type of career you’d like to have. Some personality tests even give a list of common careers for your personality type. However, don’t feel limited by that list. You can choose any career you want! They are just ideas of jobs other people with personalities similar to yours have chosen.

While some people might think that hairstylists need to be very outgoing and talkative, the truth is that a variety of personality types can be great for a career in the beauty industry. People who are naturally quieter will vibe with a stylist who has a calmer personality. Also, estheticians get to work closely with people but often don’t talk with their client during the service.

3. Speak With Mentors

If you’re curious about what it’s like to work in different careers, the easiest thing to do is to just ask people about their job. You could speak with relatives, teachers, and even your hairstylist next time you go in for an appointment! Messaging people you know on social media about their jobs and career paths is also a way to get information. While some people might not be helpful, many others will want to share their journey with you.

If you are considering going to a specific school, reaching out to students or alumni and asking them about their experience is also a good idea. Hearing what they liked or disliked about their experience will be a good way to determine if that path is right for you.

TSPA-San-Antonio-Graduation

Speaking to someone who knows you well could also help you learn more about what types of paths could be a good fit for you. A teacher, friend, or older relative could tell you what they feel are your strengths and give you ideas of careers to look into.

4. Pay Attention to Your Interests

The easiest way to tell you will like a career is if you’re already doing it! While you probably don’t have your dream job yet, you might be able to use your hobbies and talents in a future job. Maybe you have always enjoyed drawing, writing, makeup, sports, or doing hair. Any of those talents could make a great career!

You can also apply your talents toward a career that might not seem related at first glance. For example, becoming a professional athlete might not be realistic for everyone who loves sports. However, becoming a nutritionist, personal trainer, or physical therapist are all great options for people who are passionate about physical activity.

Think about what you do for fun or what subjects you are drawn to in school. Researching online about the careers that use these skills could help you discover career possibilities you have never thought of before! For example, a career in cosmetology would allow someone to exercise their creativity and people skills. At the same time, a more precise, detail-oriented person could also make an amazing colorist as they mix formulas and place color on the hair.

5. Write Down Your Goals

TSPA-San-Antonio-graduation-plans

You might have heard that a goal is just a dream until you write it down. Well, it’s true! Write down your goals and then put them in a place that you see everyday. Some people like to put them on the bathroom mirror or next to their computer screen. After you’ve written down your goal, you can write down some steps to achieve it starting right now.

The first step could be as simple as making a plan to ask someone about their career, booking a tour at a school you’re interested in, or setting aside some time to research careers and get to know yourself better.

Consider a Career in Cosmetology

Now that you’re ready to start exploring different options for life after graduation, you could consider cosmetology. If you are hard working, creative, and enjoy working with people, cosmetology could be a great career path for you to explore! Cosmetology school is much shorter than a traditional college but still has many great financial aid and scholarship opportunities. It’s also a growing field: there will never not be a demand for hair cutting and styling! For more information about cosmetology school, please contact us or schedule a tour.

Time to Give Your Makeup the Spring Cleaning Treatment

Makeup has become a staple in many of our morning preparation routines. Some of us can’t even leave the house without making sure our handy-dandy makeup bag is by our side. The team at The Salon Professional Academy(TSPA), San Antonio understands the important role that makeup plays in our lives. What many people don’t know is how crucial it is to regularly clean your makeup. Not only is cleaning important, but you should be throwing away makeup that’s expired to ensure that your skin gets the proper care it deserves. Taking care of your makeup arsenal requires time and dedication on your part, but don’t worry! We’ve got your guide on how to make sure your makeup is hygienic, up-to-date, and safe for your skin!

So When is Too Old?

First things first, it’s time to throw out all that makeup you’ve been hoarding over the years. But how can you tell if it’s time to throw out that mascara that’s been your friend for who knows how long? Well, unfortunately, it’s not as simple as you might hope. How long your makeup lasts can be affected by many factors like when the product was opened and how it’s been packaged. There are some products that are bound to get old faster because of their water content and other factors. Here is a general guideline for how long you should wait till you think about throwing it in the trash.

Liquid, Pencil or Powder?

This is something you should immediately ask yourself when trying to decide if something has outlived its usefulness. Liquids and creams will have more water and oil in their content which will drastically reduce how long you can use them. For liquid and cream foundation products it’s recommended you throw them away after six to twelve months.

If instead, you have a foundation that uses powder then it’s going to last you a lot longer. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t have an expiration date. Since the dryness of it keeps bacteria away longer than water-based makeup, power makeup can last up to two years. When it comes to pencils as long as you’re sharpening them on a regular basis they can also be used up to two years.

Natural Ingredients

Just like food, makeup with natural ingredients will expire faster than those without. So if you’re someone who makes sure that their makeup is preservative-free, then you should be checking regularly to make sure that your makeup is still performing well and isn’t irritating your skin.

Trust Yourself

If you’re ever doubting whether it’s time to say goodbye to your favorite mascara, then you could always look at it yourself to see if something looks off about it. Discoloration, abnormal texture and a strange smell are just some of the signs you should be watching out for.

woman applying mascara

If you’ve found that you keep getting dry, irritated skin in the same area, it might be time to look to your makeup as the culprit. It’s important that you’re keeping your makeup in good condition so it doesn’t do more harm than good.

Cleaning What’s Left

So now that you’ve thrown out the old makeup, how do you make sure you get the most out of what’s left in the safest way? Take the time to sanitize and care for them of course! It may seem time-consuming but your skin will thank you for all your hard work. Here are some tips on how to make the most out of your cleaning regimen.

Brushes, Brushes, Brushes

Think about how often you use a brush when applying makeup to your face. Chances are that you’re using one every day, which is why it’s so important that you’re cleaning them. Especially make sure to wash your brushes regularly if they’re coming into close contact with your eyes! Just rinse off your brushes in lukewarm water, put a drop of soap in your hands, and gently scrub your brushes. Then when you’re ready, leave them out to dry by hanging them over the counter so they can keep that nice rounded shape.

Regularly Clean Your Makeup

Cleaning your makeup tools is important but don’t forget to sanitize what you’re actually applying to your face: the makeup itself! Some can be done pretty easily, and the hardest part can be to remember to do it. If you’re using pencil products then all it takes is a quick sharpening and you’re ready to go.

Others may seem more complicated but can actually be done very quickly. Disinfecting your eyeshadow and lipstick can be completed in a few short steps. Simply scrape off the top layer and soak what remains in rubbing alcohol to keep them from getting dirty. It may seem tedious to remember but it will all be worth it.

Don’t Forget Your Bag

So you should be cleaning out your makeup and the tools to apply it but what about your bag you keep it all in. You don’t want to throw all your hard work into a makeup bag that still has last year’s mascara marks all over it. It’s a simple process but many of us don’t think about it.

makeup bag with lipstick

At least once or twice a month you should be removing your makeup from its bags and cases and giving them a good scrub. Antibacterial wipes are a quick and easy way to clean them.

Learn More About Makeup

If you’re someone who loves to learn about this and all things makeup, then you should consider looking into our esthetics program. Or if you want to focus on makeup check out our MUD makeup courses where you can learn makeup techniques used in the beauty, entertainment, and fashion industries. Contact us to learn more.

Need a Career Change? Make the Switch to Cosmetology!

So, you’re curious about a career change? Maybe you’ve been at an office job for a few years and don’t feel passionate about it. Or maybe you’re bouncing between jobs and want something more stable. Whatever the case, our cosmetology program at The Salon Professional Academy (TSPA), San Antonio can open the door to a variety of exciting careers in the beauty industry. If you’re ready for a change, are a few reasons why pursuing a future in cosmetology could be beneficial for you!

Scheduling is Flexible

Working as a cosmetologist often allows for pretty flexible scheduling. Need to work while your kids are at school? That’s a possibility. Got another job or family obligation? Nights and weekends are also an option. Unlike many other careers, cosmetologists don’t have to stick to a traditional “9 to 5” schedule. Having options is great if you’re a parent, have a busy schedule, or just would rather work in the evening or on a weekend! Whether you rent a booth at a salon, become a salon employee, or provide services from your home, cosmetology could offer flexibility that many other careers do not.

You Can Embrace Creativity

For those who love art and working with their hands, cosmetology can be a great creative career choice. Between cutting and styling hair, developing beautiful colors, and applying avant-garde makeup, cosmetologists get a chance to use their artistic brain every single day! If you’re an intrinsically creative person, then it’s likely that you’ll be happier and more fulfilled in a creative, fast-paced career rather than being stuck behind a computer all day. Every client is different, which means your daily tasks will never be exactly the same. As a stylist or makeup artist, you get to learn someone’s individual tastes and bring their unique vision to life!

It’s a Social Environment

From clients and coworkers to salon staff members and product suppliers, cosmetologists work with and around a lot of people every day. Many office jobs can get lonely, especially if you work remotely. Working in a salon, spa, or behind a makeup counter can give you the chance to make new friends, connect with clients, bounce ideas off your coworkers, and receive valuable, in-person feedback on a daily basis. Even if you’re not the most extroverted social butterfly in the world, human beings are social creatures by nature. We need the company of others. A career in cosmetology could allow you to meet new people and engage in conversation throughout the day.

You Can Constantly Learn New Things

In many office jobs, learning and growth can become stagnant. You’ll learn everything you can and then one day, there will be no more challenges. That’s usually not the case with cosmetology. The beauty industry is constantly changing. Thanks to blogging, social media, and the influencer community, new trends, cutting-edge products, and innovative application techniques are popping up daily. As a cosmetologist, keeping up with what’s new is just part of your job. Clients are looking for someone who’s on top of what’s popular. Working in the beauty industry means there will always be new challenges and new ways to do things!

Upward Mobility and Career Options

If you’re changing careers, you’re probably wondering about career options and making a living in the beauty industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, beauty industry careers in the United States are expected to grow by 13% between 2016 and 2026. The demand for hair and other beauty services is continuously growing, so now is a better time than ever to start a career in beauty. Additionally, with the massive influx of freelance makeup artists/stylists, beauty bloggers, vloggers, and influencers, beauty careers are no longer restricted to salons. There are more options than ever. A cosmetology license could just be that first step toward a potentially lucrative and personally fulfilling career!

We understand the importance of trends and embrace them in our curriculum! By giving our students the opportunities to ask questions and practice their skill, our educators are ready to support them in their journey. We have seen many of these styles make a return and are excited to support our students as they master these or even create their own!

Check out some of 2018’s top hairstyle trends, and let us know which ones are your favorite!

Ribbon Highlights

Posted by The Salon Professional Academy of San Antonio (TSPA SA) on Tuesday, February 20, 2018

Ribbon highlights? We really like this style because it blends ribbon highlights with a beautiful ashy brown. This technique, known as balayage, is used to create tons of amazing looks! At TSPA San Antonio you can learn this technique and create your own beautiful balayage looks!

Long Bob/Blunt Edges

In 2017 we saw a lot of long bobs, or lobs as they are nicknamed. This is a particularly attractive hairstyle for people with any shape face, which has made it super popular! At TSPA San Antonio we love to help our students master these types of blunt edge cuts so they can create the looks their clients love.

Colder Hues

Wonder hair hues

Wow! We love these cold-toned shades. Gray hair has been all the rage for a while, but recently more ashy and pastel tones are making an appearance. We help our students prepare to create these looks by including in-depth training about chemical processes as well as the professional line of coloring products Redken provides.

As a Redken partner we are proud to offer our students access to these amazing products as well as the cutting and styling techniques that we receive as a Redken Diamond Academy.

Natural Curls

natural hair

Natural hair is beautiful! At TSPA San Antonio we want each of our students to develop a well rounded education – and that includes the care and styling of all types of hair! Learn this skill and create beautiful curls and braids for every head of hair.

80’s Comeback

Scrunchies, denim, and big voluptuous hairstyles from the 80s are making a comeback, and we couldn’t be more pleased! This style, similar to a blowout, is taught in TSPA San Antonio’s cosmetology program. Learn this technique and create your own 80s inspired looks. If you want to give this a try yourself, do! Just avoid using too much product as that can give your new ‘do a faux appearance.

Wispy Fringe

Whispy Fringe

Fringe is all over the place. Should they be short and blunt? Long and splayed? We are all for changes in style. The cutting techniques used to master this look is valuable no matter where you want your future career to lead you. Using professional Redken products and a cutting system that we are proud of we encourage our students to learn their techniques and create many different styles of bangs.

Re-love Perms

We never thought we’d see the day when perms came back, but 2018 has surprised us again. Natural-looking perms are very popular right now with people striving to recreate that perfect wave on a daily basis. We are ready to help our students master the chemical processes that can achieve this beautiful look!
